On the fjord coast just outside Bergen, surrounded by hundreds of islands and a unique coastline, lies two historical delights: Solstrand Hotel & Bad and Bekkjarvik Gjestgiveri. In this short break you get to taste the life along the coast - with dishes inspired by the season’s produce.
You start your break at Solstrand Hotel & Bad, a unique piece of architecture built by Christian Michelsen in 1896 and lovingly run by the Schau-Larsen family since 1929. Solstrand Hotel is situated right by the fjord only 30 km south of Bergen and the airport. This unique location right by the Bjørnefjord, an arm of the Hardangerfjord, is as beautiful and serene as it is convenient.
With its magnificent view of the fjord and the mountains, Solstrand Hotel & Spa has fascinated guests from Norway and around the world. Find pure relaxation in the outdoor pool and delight in the birdsong from the hotel gardens, clear sea air and endless views of the fjord and mountains.
In the evening, the kitchen presents a three-course menu based on the season and its offerings. The stillness descends around the table: fresh fish and shellfish from Bjørnafjorden and the sea. Lamb that has grazed along steep mountainsides. Fruit and berries from lush fjord branches. Get a taste of the life along the coast, and awaken to fresh sea air and the sounds of the fjord, elements and birdlife.

The nature surrounding Bekkjarvik is as rough and rugged as it is generous. Old Norwegian sheep and deer are grazing along the beautiful surrounding forests and heather moorlands. The guesthouse has served herring and pollock, lamb and soups, flatbread, kringle (pretzel) and sweets since the 17th Century. The ingredients are the same, but the combinations vary. The sea is still generous, and the nature right on the doorstep, shares willingly from its abundant pastures. The evening menu (17-22 pm) changes every day and depends on the local ingredients the kitchen has available and receives on a daily basis.
Bekkjarvik are especially proud of their chefs, Ørjan and Arnt Johannessen, who both have the highest honours for their achievements within the culinary profession. Ørjan with his gold medal in Bocuse d’Or in Lyon in 2015 and Arnt with the highest recognition given by Norges Kokkmesteres Landsforening (the Norwegian Chefs Association): Årets Kjøkkensjef (Chef of the Year) 2014.
