Fortress experience

The secrets of the past

Norway’s national fortresses are cultural arenas visited by millions of people each year. What about a short break that lets you experience staying in some of these scenic and historical locations?

Day 1: Kongsvinger Fortress

Your self-drive holiday starts at Festningen Hotel & Resort in Kongsvinger. The majestic Kongsvinger Fortress towers over its surroundings, offering views of the town and the Glomma, Norway’s third-longest river. Driving from Oslo, the trip will take you approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. See route here

Since the 17th century, Kongsvinger Fortress has been an important piece in Norway's national political history. It has been Napoleon's north-west flank, crucial to Norway's independence and a military strategic key that has protected Norway by locking the border. The fortress has later been rehabilitated and adapted for new use, and is now a hotel of historical significance.

After exploring the area and learning more about the fortress' rich history, you will enjoy a delicious dinner in historical surroundings.

Day 2: Oscarsborg Fortress

After breakfast the next day the tour continues southwards to Drøbak outside Oslo and Oscarsborg Hotel & Resort. Driving time from Kongsvinger to Drøbak is approximately 2 hours. See route here.

Oscarsborg is a beautiful fortress that has played an important role in Norway’s history. It is best known for the sinking of the German cruiser Blücher on the night of 9 April 1940, giving the King, government and parliament the opportunity to leave Oslo and take up the fight to defend Norway elsewhere. It is claimed that no other single feat of the Second World War had the same political and military significance for Norway.

At the Fortress you will also find several galleries, a museum, a guest harbor, hiking trails, cannons and historical monuments. There are also several events, concerts and other cultural events throughout the year.

Enjoy the opportunity to spend a night in such a special place and dine in a truly unique setting.

Day 3: Fredriksten Fortress

After breakfast the next morning, take a walk around the island to experience its special atmosphere. And why not stay for lunch, before heading towards Halden and Fredriksten Fortress. Driving time from Drøbak to Halden is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. See route here.

On arrival you check in at Fredriksten Hotell. The hotel towers over the centre of Halden, yet it’s just a short walk down to the town. For hundreds of years, Fredriksten has been the site of important battles and tough negotiations and is therefore an important national cultural monument. These days, the fortress is a symbolic border post – sitting above the river that marks the border between Norway and Sweden.

Fredriksten’s importance in the formation of Norway as his own state can hardly be overestimated. In 1718, the Swedish king Charles XII was defeated in front of the fortress walls. Fredriksten has been under attack many times, but never conquered in battle. As the locals says with pride: “Often besieged, never defeated!”

A delicious dinner is served in the evening, accompanied by magnificent views.

After another good breakfast, your journey ends here - but you are welcome to add a few more days, or visit some of our other members in the Oslo area
